Pfizer Inc. said Tuesday it would end the sale of a popular erectile dysfunction drug dubbed the “Viagra for men.”
The company has a long history of selling prescription drugs to men with erectile dysfunction, with Viagra and Levitra currently being sold under the brand name, Levitra. Pfizer has made Viagra the first non-prescription drug to treat the disorder. Viagra’s sales have soared in recent years to $1.06 billion in 2009, according to figures compiled by Reuters. The drug has been used by more than 1 million men with erectile dysfunction to treat their symptoms.
But Pfizer said it has determined that the drug will not work for every man affected by the disorder and will continue to sell the drug as long as it remains available and legal. In some cases, the FDA will have to issue a stronger warning about Viagra’s potential to be abused by consumers who use the drug in conjunction with other forms of medical therapy such as surgical procedures and certain drugs. The FDA will then issue a stronger warning on Viagra and the U. S. Food and Drug Administration will issue a stronger warning about its use to warn patients about the dangers of using the drug.
In January 2012, Pfizer announced it was moving its erectile dysfunction drug, Cialis, from its original developer, Eli Lilly & Co., to a new drug application. The drug is currently sold under the brand name, Levitra. The company did not respond to a request for comment on the move.
